The Bed&coffee
Central Rooms
The Theo van Doesburg Apartment is named after the founder of the later international art movement De Stijl (1917). Before Hotel Central was built here in 1932, this location was home to Albert Janssen’s hospitality establishment. While stationed in Tilburg, Theo van Doesburg would meet here with friends to comment on the new 20th century, planting the seeds for what would become the De Stijl movement. Van Doesburg’s design for L’Aubette in Strasbourg, with its geometric and diagonal planes, forms the radiant centerpiece of the room named in his honor. A comfortable bed, a private bathroom, a fully equipped kitchen, and a balcony for relaxation complete the experience.
The Nelly van Doesburg Apartment, located on the third floor of the historic Hotel Central in the heart of Tilburg, offers a unique and inspiring stay. This artist, associated with the De Stijl movement and the third wife of Theo van Doesburg, performed as a pianist under the name Pétro van Doesburg. Fittingly, one of the walls features printed sheet music of Marcia Muziale per un Coccodrillo by Vittorio Rieti, while a grand piano dangles playfully from strings. The bed is surrounded by a stunning crocodile-skin texture. The apartment includes a fully equipped private kitchen, a modern bathroom, a smart TV, and a lovely balcony.
Experience urban living in this modern apartment, inspired by the work of Tilburg railway clerk and, above all, poet Anthony Kok, a key figure in the De Stijl art movement and a close friend of Theo van Doesburg. This spacious suite at Hotel Central, in the heart of Tilburg, features wall prints of experimental poems and a striking image of a colossal locomotive hanging in the hoists of the Dutch Railways’ main workshop, once located in Tilburg. The apartment includes a private kitchen, bathroom, and smart TV, offering a comfortable and contemporary living experience.
Room 20 is named after Tilburg native Lena Milius, who served as the administrative memory of the De Stijl movement. As its administrator, she made the day-to-day running of the movement possible. This room is a tribute to Theo van Doesburg’s second wife, featuring an empty ledger, a small desk with a classic typewriter, and a love letter from Lena to Theo that intertwines her affection with her office work. The apartment includes a private kitchen, bathroom, and smart TV, offering a comfortable and contemporary living experience.

Room 14 - Guillaume Apollinaire
Around the turn of the 20th century, French writer and poet Guillaume Apollinaire led a dramatic life: three failed loves, a shell fragment piercing his helmet and head during World War I, and later a friendship with Picasso before his early death as one of the first Dadaist artists. A life marked by hardship led to drawn poems—merging language and imagery. And finally, to a room in Hotel Central featuring three poetic calligrams from his collection *Calligrammes* to dream away with. Wake up in a comfortable bed, refresh in a refined bathroom, and enjoy breakfast from the fully equipped kitchenette.

Room 13 - J.J.P. Oud
The room named after architect J.J.P. Oud features imagery of graph paper and folding rulers forming a linear architectural drawing, reflecting his craft of design and construction. The red baseboard in the wall covering indirectly refers to the white plinth of his director’s hut in the Witte Dorp housing project in Rotterdam. On one wall hangs a screen print of the façade of his famous Café De Unie in Rotterdam. With rectangular planes in primary colors plus black and white, this iconic building shows all the hallmarks of the De Stijl movement. That’s a real homecoming. Sit in the blue chairs, take a shower in the distinctive bathroom, or poach an egg in the elegant kitchenette.

Room 12 - Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven
The spacious Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven room is richly decorated with enormous peacock and ostrich feathers, fitting the extravagant and radical “bird of paradise” she was. She lived as a free spirit, and her unconventionality and drive for innovation gave her a unique place in the art world. She scavenged objects from the streets and transformed trash and discarded materials into artworks long before others did. Elsa herself was a living Dada artwork. The room named after her exudes chic bohemian style. Its luxurious bathroom, comfortable chairs, and well-equipped kitchenette would surely have delighted her.

Room 11 - Francis Picabia
“If you want to have clean ideas, change them like shirts” is a quote from Picabia displayed above the bathroom door. In recognition of his versatility—moving effortlessly between Impressionism, Dadaism, Expressionism, and other “-isms” of the time—this champion of stylistic change was given a room where these chameleonic shifts are the theme of a fragmented collage from dozens of his paintings. Geometric shapes of triangles, rectangles, and circles swirl across the walls, with each circle containing a fragment of one of his works. Perhaps Room 11 is therefore the most cheerful room in Hotel Central. A well-equipped kitchenette, a stylish bathroom, and comfortable chairs complete the experience.

Room 10-Sophie Taeuber-Arp
Swiss artist Sophie Taeuber-Arp was a multitalent engaged in textile art, painting, puppetry, and sculpture. Her work is associated with both Dadaism and Constructivism. Between 1927 and 1929, she and her husband Jean Arp collaborated with Theo van Doesburg in Strasbourg on the redesign of the right wing of the Aubette, incorporating many ideas from De Stijl. The room named after her is an ode to her remarkable ability to create contrasting and vibrant spaces through planes, rhythms, and refined use of color. A well-equipped kitchenette and luxurious bathroom complete this atmospheric room.

Room 9 - Laszlo Moholy-Nagy

Room 8 - Evert & Thijs Rinsema
At the beginning of the 20th century, the Rinsema brothers were cobblers in Drachten who devoted themselves to creative expression in between their work. One (Evert) wrote poetry, while the other (Thijs) painted and drew. During World War I, they met Theo van Doesburg, the later founder of De Stijl, who was stationed near Tilburg. The room named after them is an ode to their work, which is still greatly appreciated. The Rinsemas dared to follow a modernist path in their unique way of expression. With elegant blue chairs, a spacious bathroom, and a well-equipped kitchenette, this second-floor room offers every comfort.

Room 21 - Bart van der Leck
In Room 21, you will find several replicas of small tiles with geometric shapes in primary colors, whose originals are part of the collection of the Kröller-Müller Museum. Van der Leck developed his own color scheme, using primarily the primary colors red, yellow, and blue, but also gray on a white background.
By omitting certain elements from his originally realistic works, he created the beginnings of a recognizable abstraction. Room 21 is a bright, airy space decorated in the characteristic colors of De Stijl. The apartment features its own kitchen, bathroom, and smart TV, offering a comfortable and contemporary living experience.
